The time: a little over a week ago.

“Huh? Wha? C’mon, Hilken, I’m still asleep. You want what? The Kimchee logo…but why? “

That’s kinda what happened. Kimchee has been in slumber mode, not putting out any new music for well over a year, our last release being the Hilken Mancini and Chris Colbourn CD in late 2005. Yes, we had a couple swell 10th Anniversary parties a few months ago, but we’ve been unsure whether it was time to settle in for some eternal rest…or not.

Turns out not. Hilken had written a bunch of great new songs. She’d put together a new band made up of some of her pals she’s been playing with for a while, namely Mike Savage (drums) and Winston Braman (bass), as well as Emily Arkin on violin, to play these new songs. Thalia Zedek was borrowed to sing a cover by a certain well-known songsmith (think Zimmerman). Kimchee Records’ Andy Hong engineered and mixed the ten tracks to make them into an album. Jeff Lipton of Peerless mastered it.

Now Kimchee wants you to know about it.

Promotion will undoubtedly be a bit haphazard, due to the last-minute quality of this brand new association between Shepherdess and Kimchee. But we know this:

This Friday, May 18, there will be copies of the debut CD by Shepherdess available at what looks to be a marvelous show at the Plough & Stars (912 Mass Ave in Cambridge). Playing along with Shepherdess will be New Randy, Stephen Brodsky, Jeff Breeze and Clint Conley (that Mission of Burma guy). You might even call this a CD Release Show. Does that give the event more ooomph?

We here at Kimchee are really digging this album. It rocks rather ferociously, which is a very good thing. We expect the press and radio will get their hands on it soon. But you can beat them to it if you want by going to this show.

See you there, my lovely sheep!

It takes a couple weeks for a middle-aged geezer like me to recover after attending two Kimchee 10th Anniversary Shows, both of which kept me and one of my main supporters, wife Danyelle, from bed until 3:00 am on consecutive Friday nights. Was it worth never-to-be- regained sleep hours? You betcha!

First of all, the press was astounding and quite unexpected. These included lengthy pre-show features in The Boston Globe (with 11 photos, one for each band!), <a href="http://theedge.bostonherald.com/musicNews/view.bg?articleid=174311"target="_blank">The Boston Herald, The Metro, and <a href="http://weeklydig.com/music/articles/kimchee_records_turns_10"target="_blank">The Weekly Dig, as well as two prominent blurbs in The Boston Phoenix. Then there were even post-show write-ups in <a href="http://www.boston.com/ae/music/articles/2007/01/01/eclectic_styles_power_a_tribute/"target="_blank">The Boston Globe and <a href="http://www.thephoenix.com/PrinterFriendly.aspx?id=31349"target="_blank">The Boston Phoenix, as well as one forthcoming in <a href="http://www.performermag.com:80/nep.liverevs.php"target="_blank">Northeast Performer magazine. So thanks are due to local scribes Jonathan Perry, Tom Kielty, Jeff Breeze, Michael Brodeur, Will Spitz, Linda Laban, Jim Sullivan, and Adam Arrigo. I’ll throw in Brett Milano as well, who has long been a Kimchee supporter in print.

Then there were the bands, Kimchee’s life’s blood (outside of the cash needed to promote them!), who all seemed to be in enchant mode and performed in ways designed to do a label proud. A special shout out is due Chris Brokaw, who followed up his solo set with mighty guitar blasts as he joined the Willard Grant Conspiracy on their monumental “Let it Roll” and the Thalia Zedek band on a seering cover of “Season of the Witch” to close the first night’s show. (See post-show reviews linked above for more details.)

The audience and the vibe? Thalia Zedek, referring to 10 Years of Kimchee Part 1, commented:

The whole night had a great flow to it, it felt really special, and the way each act contrasted with the next worked really well. Friday really felt magical. It seemed like everyone in the audience and in the bands were in a great mood , and ready to ROCK.

Paula Kelley mused further in a very swell way on <a href="http://blog.myspace.com/thepko"target="_blank">her blog about that first show at the Middle East, which was a smidgen shy of a sellout.

The second show on Jan. 5th, according to T.T. the Bear’s doorman, was held during a notoriously quiet time of the year, but that didn’t stop approximately 150 fans and supporters from coming out to celebrate Part 2. It was especially gratifying to see pseudo-trad folkies Cordelia’s Dad, after over a seven year hiatus as a band, totally deliver the electrified goods as if they were born and bred to rock! As their drummer Peter Irvine put it afterwards: “Rock’n'roll is great.”

Thanks also to booking pros Kevin Hoskins and Randi Millman of the two clubs for hosting Kimchee on these two nights…and a really big hug and love to Kyung Ja Desjardins, Kimchee guy Bob’s mother-in-law, who spent many hours preparing the yummy Korean food treats avidly consumed during both shows.

We’re still not sure what the future holds for Kimchee Records. But thanks to these shows and their embrace by music lovers in the Boston/Cambridge area, those involved with the label are feeling quite warm and fuzzy these days. Thanks so much to you all!

–Bob and Andy
