A record that invites the listener to explore a vast landscape of intriguing emotional spaces. Sometimes quiet and graceful, at other times fast, loud, and furious, the music leads the listener through a whirlwind of thought provoking images and sounds. Lyrically and musically the songs ask questions and demand attention. And the band leaves no stone unturned in their quest to find beauty in the strangest of places. Guitarist Sean McCarthy applies an intuitive and almost child-like simplicity of sentiment to the lyrics he speak-sings, often employing the detritus of our entertainment culture as imagery. Brother Dan McCarthy (drums) and Tina Helms (bass) provide the empathy and expertise so essential to the creation of these rather mysterious sounds and moods. All of which makes this CD an effortless addition to your list of things to love. (Especially if you already have a thing going for bands like Karate, June of 44, and Blonde Redhead... and you swooned over their split EP with Victory at Sea.) |
